Faculty Recruitment & Hiring

FACULTY RECRUITMENT PROCESS

All faculty recruitment must be conducted through Interfolio Faculty Search, with limited exceptions. Job requisitions and select final candidate approvals/offers are processed in iO. Refer to Faculty Hiring Workflows for detailed procedures.

Exceptions

  • The appointments of adjunct (unpaid) faculty
  • Direct, non-competitive hires of short-term, non-tenure track faculty
  • While Mathematics may use MathJobs for public postings, all final candidates must submit applications through Interfolio Faculty Search. This requires creating the job requisition in iO and the position in Interfolio Faculty Search

Please email at FacultyAffairs@rice.edu for any questions.

SEARCH COMMITTEE TRAINING

The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) supports equitable faculty recruitment through:

  • Required Training Sessions
    • Focus: Leading practices in faculty searches
    • Timing: Early in the search process during committee meetings
    • Schedule: Contact Louma Ghandour (louma@rice.edu)
  • Search Committee Resources
SEARCH PLANS AND RECRUITMENT REPORTS

When submitting a tenured/tenure-track or senior TP/RP posting for approval, the department must attach a completed Faculty Search Plan. This will be reviewed by Vice Provost for Access and Institutional Excellence.

Before Campus Interviews, the search committee must submit the completed Faculty Recruitment Activity Report to Vice Provost for Access and Institutional Excellence. Please note that the faculty recruitment authorization specifies that searches may be paused for additional recruitment efforts if the candidate pool lacks sufficient breadth, depth, and diversity of excellent candidates.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR HIRING PROPOSALS

Hiring proposals must include:

  • Position number (budgeted)
  • Draft informal offer letter (using standard template)
  • Faculty Hire Financial Proposal (cost sharing form)
  • Supporting memos from the Dean and the Department Chair justifying the hire
  • Candidate’s CV and reference letters

Please note that complete submissions with all required documents endure efficient review and timely approval.
